How climate change is impacting the construction industry

climate change

Climate change seems to be in everybody’s mind and that is a huge step on awareness related to this important situation that affects many aspects of future life.

At Carolina Custom Homes we know the construction industry does not escape from this situation. To have an idea think about it for a second: a milder climate can reduce the durability of building materials and also can affect the indoor climate of the building. On the other hand, warmer temperatures represent a need for cooling to consider.

Another example, higher levels of water underground, in streams, and the risk of storms represent a problem for buildings and their safety. So, this is why climate change is such an important matter for all of society.

Buildings can be vulnerable to climate change

Roads, buildings, among others must be designed for specific climate conditions so if we don`t think about climate change, it will be almost impossible to work on sustainable options that can be maintained over time.

Buildings can be vulnerable to climate change so there can be an increase in the risk of collapse due to storms, snow, water encroachment, or other damages that reduce the structure lifetime.

Wetter winters and sudden rain make it very important to direct rainwater and meltwater away from houses so having this in mind from the designing process is a must.

We are all adapting to climate change

Some countries are being more aware of this situation and are making efforts to adapt life to climate change. Especially those with four climate stations.

Nowadays, thinking about strengthening existing buildings is in the owners’ hands, who need to be informed about the weaknesses of its buildings. But in the future, there may be a need for authorities to be informed about this and work together to remedy them to protect people.

At Carolina Custom Homes we believe that soon new instructions on building solutions will be known, especially to reduce indoor extreme temperatures during climate changing conditions. At some point, construction technicians will be recommended to work-oriented to some new design parameters considering climate change.

Also, new roads must be designed under future requirements to make sure people are safe and protected when using them.

In this case, rain is the biggest risk factor, so surface water must be directed away from roads, also to ensure its durability.

Climate change introduces new risks so a continuous analysis needs to be carried to take actions when needed and prevent serious problems. This has been known a while ago but many parts of society still seem to not understand how serious this is.

We care not only about the quality of our job, but about creating projects that are safe, comfortable, and with a long life so we take every external condition that could affect the results very seriously.

Climate change is important and we are all involved in this since we only have one planet to take care of.
