What is a building permit and why do I need one?
A building permit, also known as a construction permit, is a document issued by the local government, authorizing construction. Building permits are required in most jurisdictions for new construction, additions, and major renovations. Any work involving electrical, plumbing or mechanical systems, as well as structural repair, usually requires a permit. Obtaining a permit includes inspection of the construction during and after completion to ensure compliance with all building codes. Stiff fines and penalties can be imposed for failure to obtain a permit, and in extreme cases, demolition of unauthorized construction if it can not meet code.
